World Hunger Still a Problem

Proverbs 14:31 says, “The one who oppresses the poor insults their Maker, but one who is kind to the needy honors Him.”

This is a pretty bold statement if you think about it. Do we oppress the poor when we ignore their needs? Do we exploit them when we don’t heed their calls for help? The Bible is clear. This statement exists in Scripture for a reason—for us to take it to heart.

In a recent article, I read that “chances of halving world hunger by 2015 [are] remote.” According to the report, 75 million NEW people joined the list of those suffering from famine last year—41 million are in Asia and the Pacific, 24 million are in sub-Saharan Africa, six million are in Latin American, and four million are in North Africa and the Middle East.

Too often, I think we forget how good we have it here in the land of the free. Over the next several posts, I’d like to pose a few thoughts about world hunger, what the Bible says, and how we should get involved.

For now, it might do all of us some good—those of us who claim to be followers of Jesus and those who are not—to research legit organizations where we get an involved in this issue and honor the Lord by helping those in need.
