Holiday Tragedies
You probably heard the story about the Wal-Mart employee who was trampled to death in New York on Black Friday a few weeks ago.
Crowds waited outside the store like vultures ready to attack. The mob pushed through the doors, shattering the glass, and stormed the store, trampling one temporary holiday worker, Jdimytai Damour.
According to the New York Times, one detective on the scene said the scene was “utter chaos” and the crowd was “out of control.” Apparently, some of the crowd members, when they were told to leave due to a tragic death of an employee, yelled back excuses and continued shopping.
My initial reaction to this news was shock. I thought: People want “stuff” that much? So much so that they lay aside any regard for human life to get what they want? It seems as if people have become more interested in filling their lives with gadgets that won’t even satisfy in the end.
Over and over again, we see the importance of life in Scripture. This was certainly a tragic thing to happen. People have been up in arms about it since it happened and the case is still unresolved.
But I began thinking of this: How often do we trample over and crush the lives of unborn children every day, without any regard, and never even give them a second thought? When will somebody stand up and do something about those tragedies?
