Creation Museum intolerance. What’s your response?
I read a news storythe other day that has had me thinking about my response to issues in general. As believers, I think we always need to be aware of the words we choose and the attitude we have when responding to issues that aren’t in favor of what is good and right, but how far is too far to stand up and speak out against these things?
The Cincinnati Zoo and the Creation Museum initially created a partnership that was set to boost tourism and allow visitors to see both attractions. Keep in mind that the Creation Museum had set up a live nativity as well. However, the zoo pulled out of the agreement after receiving several complaints.
James Leach, a Cincinnati radiologist, told the Cincinnati Enquirer, “The Cincinnati Zoo is one of this city’s treasures. The Creation Museum is an international laughingstock.”
The zoo received hundreds of complaints from intolerant people who thought the Creation Museum’s presence wasn’t necessary or called for.
One spokesman for the Creation Museum said, “Frankly, we are used to this kind of criticism from our opponents, and so being ‘expelled’ like this is not a huge surprise…. It’s a pity that intolerant people have pushed for our expulsion simply because of our Christian faith. Some of their comments on blogs reveal great intolerance for anything having to do with Christianity.”
I know there are people that are extremely opposed to our faith, but when is it appropriate (and necessary) for us to “complain” as well (in a Christ-like manner, of course) and ask that we be heard regardless of other’s intolerance? I think this may be a prime opportunity for living out our values in front of the world, don’t you think?
